MEET THE JOHNSTON FAMILY

Meet the Johnston Family of West Grove, PA

The Johnston family is facing a challenge that no family ever expects to experience more than once.

Their three-year-old daughter, Olivia, was recently diagnosed with relapsed Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in early March 2026, bringing them back into a world they had only recently left behind.

Olivia had already battled AML once before. From October 2024 through April 2025, she underwent intensive treatment at Nemours, including long hospital stays and difficult procedures. After months of fighting, she completed that phase of her journey.

Now, just months later, they are facing it again.

Olivia’s treatment plan includes extended hospital stays, intensive chemotherapy, and a required bone marrow transplant. Even when treatment goes as planned, she is expected to remain immunocompromised through the end of the year.

Throughout her care, Olivia has undergone regular spinal fluid testing to ensure the cancer has not spread. Thankfully, there has been no involvement beyond her blood, though her treatment remains complex and demanding.

Amid all of this, Ryan and Kim are also caring for their eight-month-old daughter, Eleanora. They learned they were expecting her during the first week of Olivia’s initial treatment in 2024, and they are deeply grateful to be together as a family during this time.

Ryan, a Patrol Sergeant with the Delaware River and Bay Authority Police Department, anticipates being out of work for an extended period under FMLA, resulting in a significant reduction in household income. The family is currently living on a single income, as Kim stepped away from her nursing career during Olivia’s first battle to care for her full time.

In addition to the emotional toll, the financial strain is substantial. The family continues to manage their monthly mortgage while facing ongoing and uncertain medical expenses.

Despite everything they are facing, the Johnston family remains focused on Olivia’s treatment and recovery.
