MEET THE McDERMOTT FAMILY
Brian McDermott is a 2012 graduate and former senior year captain of West Chester University’s football team. Before his accident, Brian coached a year for the Division 3 National Championship Mount Union College football team in Ohio. Brian has also been a volunteer firefighter, putting his own life in danger to save others on a regular, volunteer, basis for over 7 years.
In the early morning hours of May 26th 2013, when Brian was struck by a Delaware State Police Cruiser as he was walking along the edge of Coastal Highway (Rt. 1) in Dewey Beach with friends from West Chester. Brian was eventually airlifted to Christiana hospital with critical lower body injuries that included a broken pelvis, internal bleeding and a badly mangled left leg. After 5 weeks of hospital care and 2 weeks at Bryn Mawr Rehab, his leg had to be amputated below the knee.
